OBJEKTIVES
The
objective of Afrikan History Week
(AHW) is to shed light on and present
unknown and
ancient parts of Afrikan history.
AHW recognises the challenge in
using untraditional means to sending
out a message to an urban, modern
and specific public. The organization
will introduce Afrikan artists and
make visible Afrika’s powerful
and unknown past, crossing the boundaries
of the usual perceptions of Afrikan
history and culture. By doing this,
our intention is to create a notion
of pride in the Afrikan community,
and simultaneously, build a conscious
awareness in
the general Norwegian society.
AHW uses the Sankofa symbol as their
logo, a bird reaching backwards
to pick up a grain of
corn. Sankofa is an Adinkra symbol
from the Ashanti and Gyaman nations
in West Africa which, directly translated,
means "Return to pick up what
you have lost". The expression
describes the meaning of knowing
your history.
Even though AHW has international
partners, the main focus is on Norway.
AHW implies that increased awareness
about history and culture contributes
to a healthier society, based on
balance and mutual respect. AHW
also wishes to create an arena where
the many Afrikan resources, talents
and expertise found amongst the
Afrikan community in Norway can
be
exposed and made visible. This annual
cultural festival, "Visibly-Invisible",
accommodates a
broad spectrum audience in regards
to age, background and interests.
