Topic: “The fight for identity and survival; Islam and Arabization in the Sudan”
This year’s AHW symposium focuses on the Sudan, Africa’s largest country. The Sudan’s history stretches back to the Nubian civilization, and our symposium this year begs several important questions: How did the Sudan go from a major civilization to terror ridden? What role does Islamization and Arabization play in this process? And, finally, while the media’s attention is directed at Darfur, what happens in the rest of the Sudan? Dr. Muhammad Jalal Hashim is a Sudanese Nubian and professor of Nubian linguisitics and ethnology. He is a human rights activist and author, and is considered an authority on Nubia and the Sudan.

Dr. Hashim’s talk will follow a showing of the movie Nubian Spirit: the African Legacy of the Nile Valley (Louis Buckley). The floor will be open to debate after Dr. Hashim’s talk.
